Personal hygiene is an essential part of a patients' physical and psychological well being. It includes bathing, pericare, hair care, nail care, shaving, skin care and back rub. It falls within the classification of activities of daily living (ADL's). Determination of the needed hygiene is dependent on both patient and floor considerations. Patient considerations include age, race, hemodynamic stability, and amount of soiling. Floor considerations may include staffing and life saving needs of other patients. Experience will guide a nurse in making the correct prioritization .
